
Men take claim 5-2 victory in final non-conference match of 2024
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NEB. – The Mustang men emerged victorious in their final non-conference match of the 2024 season, defeating Luther 5-2 at the First Serve Tennis Center.
Morningside took two-of-three doubles matches to get the match started on the right foot, as Winyou Asavaruangchai and Abhishek Mohapatra won the no. 3 doubles match 7-5 and Mark Trenkle and Gustav Sjoberg took the no. 1 match 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker.
Skander Ben Abdallah added to Morningside's lead as the match moved to singles play, winning 6-3, 6-0. Trenkle kept the Mustang momentum, winning 6-2, 6-2, and Santiago Minetti came through with a 6-3, 6-0 win to clinch the match.
Luther didn't go down quietly, though, picking up a pair of wins in singles play before Joao Pedro Pierry Izoldi Costa won a 6-4, 6-3 match in the no. 6 spot to secure Morningside's 5-2 lead.
The Mustangs now look to Midland, who visits the Mason Family Tennis Complex on Monday with outright possession of the Great Plains Athletic Conference title on the line.
