Bryan Farris is the fourth head coach in the history of the Mustangs' swim program.

Farris, a former NCAA All-American and Big Ten Conference champion as a competitor at the University of Iowa, had been the head coach of the Sioux City boys high school swimming team and was the former head coach of the Sioux City East High School girls swimming team. Farris has also helped develop younger swimmers with the Siouxland Sharks Swim Club.

Farris graduated from Iowa in 1986 and earned a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of South Dakota in 1988.

While at Iowa, Farris swam for Hawkeye teams that captured back-to-back Big Ten Conference championships in 1981 and 1982. He was the 1984 Big Ten individual champion in the 100-yard freestyle and was part of Big Ten championship teams in the 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays. Farris was a NCAA All-American in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 1981 and the 800-yard freestyle relay in 1982. As a senior in 1984, Farris was a Hawkeye team captain and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.

His collegiate bests of 20.07 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 44.21 in the 100-yard freestyle still rank among the best in Iowa history.

During his prep career at La Crosse Central High School, Farris was the Wisconsin state champion in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles as both a junior and senior. He became the first high school swimmer in Wisconsin history to break 21 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.
