Bickel Scores Twice to Lead Mustangs

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Morningside University men's soccer team won its season opener at Elwood Olsen Stadium on Monday, 4-2.

The Mustangs (1-0-0) scored two goals apiece in each half, led by Jordan Bickel's two goals. Bickel's first goal came in the eighth minute, assisted by Bennet Wesselkaemper.

Morningside's second goal came 29 minutes, 51 seconds later off the foot of Niklas Gruener. Gruener scored from inside the box and found the top corner of the net to make it a 2-0 game. Tassilo Koerner assisted on the goal.

Viterbo scored twice to tie the game, then in the 78th minute, Bickel scored his second goal of the match. Koerner also had the assist that gave the Mustangs the lead.

The Mustangs added to their lead with 8:04 left in the match. Gustavo Dos Santos scored the goal, his first of the year. Jonas Markfoged assisted in Dos Santos' goal.

The V-Hawks took 16 shots while the Mustangs took 10. Morningside goalkeeper Timon Koerber had five saves.

Morningside had three corner kicks to Viterbo's eight.

The Mustangs' next match is at 5 p.m. Wednesday at William Penn. They'll return to their home pitch Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Grand View.
