SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside picked up its most satisfying tie of the season as it upset Briar Cliff in a shootout in the semifinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament this afternoon. The contest ended as a 2-2 tie following two overtime periods, with Morningside advancing on a 4-3 shootout win.
The Chargers put a goal on the board early, finding the back of the net within the first 10 minutes of play. The Mustangs would answer in the 49th minute, as Jonas Markfoged sent the net fluttering, giving Johannes Lang an assist in the process.
Morningside would keep BCU off the board in the second half, with Timon Koerber saving a pair of second-half shots.
It was Niklas Kneller who struck paydirt in the first overtime period, connecting on an assist from Levi Von Hagen. Briar Cliff would counter with its own goal in the second overtime, forcing a shootout.
The Mustangs were flawless as they took their penalty kicks, standing strong under pressure as Yannik Vogel, Timon Koerber, Jurre Thielen, and Sander Kohberg took their shots. Briar Cliff recorded goals on its first three, missing the final two attempts.
Morningside now turns to Northwestern College, with the GPAC postseason tournament championship on the line in Orange City on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
