Double overtime draw sends Mside to second straight GPAC title

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – One-hundred and ten tension-filled minutes at Briar Cliff University's Faber Field were well worth it for head coach Tom Maxon's Morningside College Mustangs Saturday, Nov. 21.

With the 2020 Great Plains Athletic Conference title on the line, the Maroon and crosstown rival Chargers put on an instant classic. Both sides managed regulation goals, with BCU doing so in the 25th minute, which was equaled off the trusty foot of junior forward Okan Golge (JR/Cologne, Germany) (Cologne, Germany) in the 75th minute due to a home team penalty in the box. Golge, who led the offense with seven total attempts, four being on frame, lined up and sent one into the BC net for the 1-1 equalizer.

From that point on, Morningside sophomore goalkeeper Bjarne Huth (SO/Bad Vilbel, Germany) (Bad Vilbel, Germany) and Briar Cliff's Leandro Faria teamed up with their respective defenses to keep any remaining scoreboard changes null and void. Huth finished the afternoon with six saves, while Faria tallied three, and his defender group added one.

As the final whistle blew, elation erupted on the Mustangs' sideline. The double-overtime draw handed the program their second straight conference championship and the top seed in the postseason tournament, set for April 2021. Morningside closed out the regular season 10-2-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the conference.
