Pivotal conference match-ups conclude home regular season schedule

Hastings College's women and Concordia University's men pay a visit to Elwood Olsen Stadium for Great Plains Athletic Conference action Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men. Live video is accessible for both matches through links at www.msidemustangs.com, the Internet home of Morningside College athletics.

*Head coach Tom Maxon's Mustangs are coming off an impressive weekend. The men out-scored the opposition 13-1 in road wins at the University of Jamestown and Presentation College, and the women blanked the Jimmies 1-0.

*Maxon was looking for a rebound from the defending champions on Nov. 7 and 8. He and his staff got that --- and more. Taking a trek to the conference's landmass's northern regions, the Mustangs out-scored UJ and PC by 12 goals in 180 minutes of play. They opened the blitzkrieg with a 6-0 victory at UJ Saturday and then added to it with four goals in the first 45 Sunday en route to a rousing 7-1 win over Presentation. Junior forward Okan Golge (JR/Cologne, Germany) (Cologne, Germany) couldn't have had much better of a 48 hours. He struck the Jimmies defense for two goals and an assist and then added four more goals, including the first three Morningside scored at Saints Soccer Field. He wasn't the only one getting in on a 17-2 shot advantage. Freshman midfielder/forward Victor Beker (FR/Amsterdam, Netherlands) (Amsterdam, Netherlands) notched a goal and two assists an afternoon after posting a five-point outing at Jamestown (two goals and an assist). The impressive offensive output made things simple for the Maroon defense. Junior goalkeeper Tobias Sadler (JR/Augsburg, Germany) (Augsburg, Germany) made the most of his starting chance in Aberdeen, going 90 minutes with just one score allowed en route to his first victory of the year and moving his career mark to 6-0. The day before, he and sophomore Bjarne Huth (SO/Bad Vilbel, Germany) (Bad Vilbel, Germany) shared the shutout in North Dakota.

*Golge's school-record-tying output over the weekend launched him into the top 10 of five National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' statistical top 10. His 15 total goals and four game-winning strikes are second-highest, and his 34 total and 3.78 points per contest stand third and seventh. He's also seventh in goals per match (1.67).

*Senior goalkeeper Alexandra Homan (SR/Omaha, Neb.) (Omaha, Neb.) stood tall again for the Mustangs women's team this past weekend. She forged her fifth shutout of the season and sixth of her career, tallying six saves. Freshman midfielder Sina Feeser (FR/Heilbronn, Germany) (Heilbronn, Germany) knocked in her second game-winning score of the year, taking an assist from fellow freshman midfielder Anna Ljulijic (FR/Neumuenster, Germany) (Neumuenster, Germany) in the 17th minute to aid in besting Jamestown 1-0.

*Morningside's six-match win streak is the program's most extended since the 2013 squad forged seven consecutive wins on the way to the conference championship.

*Homan's yen for defensive work in goal continues to catch the eye of the national numbers. Her .240 goals-against average is sixth-lowest. That figure is second-lowest in the league, trailing only Briar Cliff University's Ruby Campa (.21).

*A clash at Doane University is next for the Mustangs. Match times at DU's Al Papik Field are 1 p.m. for the women and 3:15 p.m. for the men.
