Northwestern drops Mside from GPAC unbeaten list

SIOUX CITY, IA – A furious second-half comeback by Morningside College fell short Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Head coach Tom Maxon's Mustangs, looking to keep pace with fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference unbeaten Briar Cliff University, couldn't overcome Northwestern College's two-goal first-half attack and a remarkable effort in goal from Red Raiders' sophomore goalkeeper Ezekiel Foltz. Mside, dipping to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, held a large edge in total shots (21-8), including seven attempts on frame. However, Foltz stood on his head throughout the 90 minutes with seemingly one amazing save after another while other home team attempts on the doorstep went wide or high with the Maroon frantically looking to tie things up in the latter stages.

A penalty kick score in the 24th minute got the visitors going as less than 10 minutes later, they added to their advantage. From that point, Northwestern didn't see many opportunities against sophomore goalkeeper Bjarne Huth (SO/Bad Vilbel, Germany) (Bad Vilbel, Germany) or the Mside defense.

On the other end, what had been a difficult first half offensively swung 360 for Maxon's charges. The freshman-junior combination of midfielder Victor Beker (FR/Amsterdam, Netherlands) (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and forward Okan Golge (JR/Cologne, Germany) (Cologne, Germany) worked out a nifty back and forth with Beker snapping a successful attempt into the right side of Northwestern's net to make the count 2-1 with more than 35 minutes to play. Try as they might, though, no other attempts found their way past Foltz's large range or were victims of tough luck.

Golge's five total shots, two of which were on goal, led Morningside. Fellow junior Moritz Lusch (JR/Bielefield, Germany) (Bielefield, Germany) added four with three on the frame, and another junior, forward Nico Renzi (Rome, Italy), turned in three.

The Mustangs, slipping into a three-way tie for second with Hastings College and Concordia University, look to rebound with a trip to the University of Jamestown Saturday, Nov. 7. Match time against the Jimmies is 3:30 p.m.

NOTE: Golge's assist ran his current personal point streak to seven successive matches.
