Mustangs surge in second half for 19th victory of season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Morningside University men's basketball team led by as many 20 points in the second half on Wednesday in its 98-88 win over Waldorf at Allee Gymnasium.

The Warriors cut the deficit to seven early in the second half, but the Mustangs disrupted their rhythm and delivered clutch shots of their own.

"We played with more urgency in the second half," head coach Trent Miller said. "We got a lot of transition baskets, and limited them to one shot per possession."

Brendan Buckley put the Mustangs up 20 with 6 minutes, 17 seconds left, and that created the cushion his team needed to secure its 19th overall and 12th in Great Plains Athletic Conference action.

Daniel Brocaille scored 16 of his 18 total points in the first half. Brocaille made five of seven shots, and connected on four 3-pointers. He also had three assists in the first half, and brought down six rebounds. In all, Brocaille had eight rebounds (six offensively), three assists and three steals.

"Dan was doing a nice job of getting bodies on screens, and a lot of his action came off other guys running off his ball screens," Miller said. "He did a nice job of relocating and finding the 3-point line, and give his teammates credit, they found him and his shot pocket. He shoots when he's open and he had those dropping today."

Buckley and Brocaille were among five men who scored in double figures. Joey Skoff led with 27 points, making 10 shots and seven free throws. Brocaille and Skoff also had three steals each.

Alex Wilcoxson — who scored 21 in the Nov. 26 contest vs. the Warriors — chipped in 16 points in Wednesday's home contest. Justin Sitti scored 13 points, while Buckley had 10.
