Historic night ends in victory for the Mustangs

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Two Mustangs eclipsed 1,000 career points and Morningside set program history in a 103-88 win over No. 23 Dordt Tuesday night inside Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.

The No. 19 Mustangs went over 100 points for a third consecutive game, which is a first in program history. To add to the historic evening, Joey Skoff and Ely Doble eclipsed 1,000 career points during the game. 

As for the game itself, Morningside and Dordt went toe-to-toe for the first 25 minutes of action, with the game tied at 56 with 15:30 to play. The Mustangs had a slim 48-46 halftime advantage, but Dordt had the largest lead of the game to that point at 28-19 early in the first half. Morningside led by as much as four in the opening 20 minutes.

Skoff, who had a team high 27 points in the win, stole the ball with the game tied at 56, and went down the floor to score a lay-up plus draw the foul. He converted the and-one opportunity to spark an 18-2 run for the Mustangs, breaking the game open and putting Morningside ahead 74-58 with 10:21 to play. Dordt wouldn't go away easily, as the Defenders battled back within 10, 94-84, with two minutes remaining. 

Morningside withstood the late push by Dordt, and clinched a fourth straight win. Skoff finished with 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting, adding five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Doble totaled 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Aidan Vanderloo added 15 points and is now nine points away from 1,000 points in his career. 

Brendan Buckley was the fourth starter in double figures for Morningside, totaling 10 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Dylan Johnson added 10 points off the bench for the Mustangs.

Following the Thanksgiving break, Morningside remains home to take on Briar Cliff Wednesday, Nov. 29.
