First half surge pushes Mustangs to conference win

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside hosted an always tough Dordt University in Allee Gymnasium, hosting its second GPAC contest of the young 2021-22 season.  The Mustangs, despite trailing early, benefitted from a surge midway through the first half to gain separation from the Defenders on the way to an 88-75 win.

While the teams stacked up similarly statistically, with Morningside holding the edge from the floor, shooting at 53.1% to Dordt's 46.3%, while Dordt shot 29% from three-point land to Morningside's 26.7%, it was the Mustangs' 88.9% free throw percentage and 43 rebounds that stood as outliers and proved to be an crucial advantage for the home team.

Joey Skoff was Morningside's leading scorer, coming off the bench to put up 17 points. Aidan Vanderloo led the starting personnel with 16. Trey Brown secured a double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds to lead the Mustangs and netting five shots from inside the arc for 10 points.

Morningside is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Doane University in Crete, Neb.
