Glass Cleaners - Morningside ties second-highest single-game rebound total, rolls in GPAC second-half opener

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Three players with double-digit rebounds … two double-doubles … 10 three-pointers … six blocked shots.

Not a bad day's work for head coach Jim Sykes' Morningside College men's basketball squad Saturday, Jan. 9. Out-boarding the visiting Hastings College Broncos 59-32, with the total tying for second-most in a game in program history, to go along with the blocked shot and long-range shooting success helped send the Mustangs to an 88-69 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory.

Dazzling a happy crowd on its Allee Gymnasium court inside the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center, the Maroon scored the first seven points and didn't look back. The visiting Broncos, draining seven three-pointers of their own, did keep it as close as 11 (49-38) early through the second half before a 21-9 run from the 17:29 to 9:35 marks put the game out of reach.

The Mustangs, moving to 13-2 overall and 9-2 in the conference, were led by a healthy dose of freshman guard Aidan Vanderloo (FR/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa). In his second straight start, Vanderloo tied a single-game personal high with 19 points due to hitting five three-pointers. The Gretna, Neb., senior tandem of center Trey Brown (SR/Gretna, NE ) and guard Zach Imig (SR/Gretna, NE ) each produced double-doubles, as Brown wound up with 12 points, 12 boards, and three blocked shots, and Imig tallied 12 points, ten rebounds, three assists, and five assists. Sophomore guards Will Pottebaum (SO/LeMars, IA) (LeMars, Iowa) and Collin Hill (JR/Jewell, IA) (Jewell, Iowa), the other two starters, also produced impressive afternoons. Pottebaum totaled 10 points and three assists, and Hill was just two points shy of a double-double of his own (eight points, ten rebounds). Morningside's bench, which contributed 27 points, was led by freshman guard Joey Skoff (FR/Bellevue, Neb.) (Bellevue, Neb.), who posted seven points, four rebounds, and two blocked shots.

Mside received good news on the loop standings, too. Dakota Wesleyan University had its perfect GPAC mark scuttled by Midland University in Fremont, Neb. With the Tigers' loss, Sykes' crew pulled within a half-game of first. The Mustangs are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 13, hosting crosstown rival Briar Cliff University.
