Mside overwhelms crosstown rivals, run win streak to seven

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside College's acumen in a balanced scoring attack continued Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Head coach Jim Sykes' Mustangs, pushing their record to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, turned in four players with double figures for a fourth straight game to topple Briar Cliff University 76-58. The man leading the charge has become a household name of late for Maroon fans.

Senior center Trey Brown (SR/Gretna, NE ) (Gretna, Neb.) rattled off his third straight double-double and fifth such effort in his last seven appearances, going 10-of-15 from the field for a robust 66.7 clip while grabbing 12 boards, swiping a steal, and blocking a Charger shot attempt as part of a 22-point night. He had plenty of help in getting the Mustangs to their final tally, as freshman guard Joey Skoff (FR/Bellevue, Neb.) (Bellevue, Neb.) registered his best collegiate outing to date with 15 points off the bench; senior guard Zach Imig (SR/Gretna, NE ) (Gretna, Neb.) added 13 and also corralled six rebounds; and sophomore guard Will Pottebaum (SO/LeMars, IA) (LeMars, Iowa) finished with 10.

BC didn't make it easy for Mside to forge its seventh straight triumph. The host Chargers, set on defending their Newman Flanagan Center court, led 20-15 at the opening frame's halfway point. However, a 14-6 run for the visitors that helped close out the first 20 minutes was a foreshadowing of things to come. Sykes' squad tallied the first seven digits of the second half and didn't look back.

The Mustangs begin two in a row on their home court at Allee Gymnasium inside the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center Saturday, Dec. 12. Game time against Concordia University is 4 p.m.
