Borchers combo efforts lead way, can't stave off red-hot BC

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside College produced another balanced scoring attack in Great Plains Athletic Conference action Saturday, Feb. 1.

However, a quartet of Mustangs winding up in double figures couldn't hold back a high-voltage Briar Cliff University shooting performance at BCU's Newman Flanagan Center. The Chargers seemingly had answers to every Maroon comeback and stopped a school-record-tying 23-game win streak with a 94-83 decision that sent the No. 1-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' Division II team to its first overall and league loss.

BCU hit better than 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc to end a four-game Morningside win streak in the series. Senior guard Alex Borchers (SR/South Sioux City, NE ) (South Sioux City, Neb.) and senior center Tyler Borchers (SR/Le Mars, IA ) (LeMars, Iowa) did their level best to keep the visitors unbeaten, scoring 23 points apiece, as Alex also added eight rebounds and five assists and Tyler adding another double-double to his already remarkable collegiate resume (12 rebounds) to go along with four assists and two steals. Junior forward Zach Imig (JR/Gretna, NE ) (Gretna, Neb.) wound up with 13 points, five assists, and five rebounds, and senior forward Ben Hoskins (SR/Wayne, NE ) (Wayne, Neb.) nailed four three-pointers for 12 points.

Morningside returns home to Allee Gymnasium in the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center Wednesday, Feb. 5. Game time versus Midland University is 8 p.m.

NOTES: Tyler Borchers closed out a memorable week with his second successive and third in his last four outings double-double. The senior post standout averaged 30 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and two blocks during the span … Alex Borchers' four treys tied a personal single-game high he originally set against Dordt University during the 2018-19 season.
