Unbeaten Span Continues - Top 20 tilt goes way of Mustangs

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Stymying a usually red-hot shooting Mount Marty College long-range shooting arsenal, Morningside College kept its 2019-20 season unblemished Saturday, Jan. 25.

The visiting Lancers, who canned 17 treys at a high-rent district 45.9 percent clip in the two sides' first meeting in Yankton earlier this month, managed 11 long-distance makes at a rugged 33.3 percent rate inside Allee Gymnasium of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. Meanwhile, the host Mustangs hit 13 three-pointers at nearly 45 percent as part of a solid 49.1 percent overall field goal outing. Those numbers added in with a 22-11 advantage in made free throws and a 40-33 edge on the glass factored into a 91-72 Great Plains Athletic Conference win.

After a nip-and-tuck start, head coach Jim Sykes' team (22-0 overall, 14-0 GPAC) broke away from an 11-11 tie at the 12:56 mark with a 22-5 run. The Maroon went to halftime with a 43-28 lead and had to withstand an MMC surge that cut the margin to 12 (57-45) midway through the second 20, using a 9-0 stretch to up the ante to 21.

Senior guard Alex Borchers (SR/South Sioux City, NE ) (South Sioux City, Neb.) flourished in front of the capacity crowd. He scored 20 points, a personal season-high, and was only two boards short of a double-double while dishing out four assists. Senior forward Matt Hahn (SR/Fremont, NE ) (Fremont, Neb.) wowed the home crowd with more outer area code three-point buckets as part of a 15-point, five-rebound, one-blocked shot and two-assist afternoon. The upperclassman inside duo of senior Tyler Borchers (SR/Le Mars, IA ) (LeMars, Iowa) and junior Trey Brown (JR/Gretna, NE ) (Gretna, Neb.) also wound up in double-digits with Brown totaling 12 and Borchers finishing with 11.

Mside hits the road for two straight beginning Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tip-off time at Hastings College's Lynn Farrell Arena is 8 p.m.
