SIOUX CITY, IOWA – A 17-2 run in the early stages of the first half Wednesday, Dec. 5, turned out to be the key factor in a 17th straight Morningside College regular season victory.
After visiting Midland University scored eight of the game's first nine points, head coach Jim Sykes' Mustangs turned up the defensive pressure and were off and running to an 18-10 advantage with just over 11:30 remaining. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' co-No. 2 ranked program continued to build the margin throughout before the final buzzer sounded for a 90-69 Great Plains Athletic Conference win to the merriment of 800 fans at Allee Gymnasium at the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
The upperclassman trio of senior guard Brody Egger (Urbandale, Iowa); junior forward/center Tyler Borchers (LeMars, Iowa); and junior forward Matt Hahn (Fremont, Neb.) ended in scoring double digits. Egger registered 20 to lead the way, while Borchers added 14, and Hahn finished with 11 to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, both team bests.
Morningside (10-0 overall, 7-0 GPAC) winds up its pre-Christmas home schedule Saturday, Dec. 8. Jamestown College of North Dakota is its guest for a 4 p.m. start.
