Cole's TD, Phipps' interception secure Morningside victory

FREMONT, Neb. – On Saturday in a 28-21 win over Midland, the 14th-ranked Morningside University football team executed a handful of key plays that helped seal the game.

A Ryan Cole 1-yard run and a late Landry Phipps interception were key fourth-quarter plays to assist Morningside to a 2-1 overall record, and 2-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Cole's fourth-and-goal scoring play that gave the Mustangs the lead happened with 3 minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the game. That ended a nine-play, 50-yard drive that took 6:28 off the clock.

Phipps' interception came with 1:56 remaining, and that happened on a fourth down. During the same defensive stand, Brady Schlager sacked Warriors quarterback Teryn Berry for 10 yards.

Morningside got the ball back, and managed to tick 69 seconds off the clock, and coach Steve Ryan asked his defense to give one last stand.

Teyel Lowe earned a five-yard sack on Berry, and then a slew of Mustangs sacked the Warriors QB for 10 more yards to seal the game. Morningside's defense held its opponent to 27 yards on 28 carries.

In terms of tackles for lost yardage, Morningside had 13 for 71 yards. It also had five sacks for 40 yards.

Isaac Pingel led his Maroon and White squad with 11 total tackles, while Cade Harriman and Austin Jurgens both had six total tackles. Harriman and Jurgens also got an interception.

The Mustangs scored in all four quarters. During the first quarter, Zach Norton caught a 16-yard pass from quarterback Zack Chevalier.

Late in the second quarter, Chevalier found Lennx Brown from the Midland 5. After a Tommy Fitzsimmons PAT, the score was tied at 14-14 at the half.

Cole broke the tie with an 88-yard run with 8:11 left in the third quarter. He led the rushing attack with 163 yards on 27 carries.

Chevalier completed 15 of 28 passes for 207 yards. His longest completion was for 36 yards.

After two weeks on the road, the Mustangs return home on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Doane. That will start the stretch of three home games among the next five weeks.
