Morningside gains strong representation on GPAC weekly honors

Morningside University put two football student-athletes on the Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for Sept. 6-12 with a Sept. 13 release.

Senior wide receiver Austin Johnson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) made it two in a row for Mside regarding the Offensive Player of the Week accolade. Fellow senior Tyler Wingert (Holstein, Iowa), a linebacker for the Mustangs, picked up the program's first 2021 Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

Johnson recorded the ninth-best single-game receiving effort in Morningside history with 261 yards during a 56-14 win at Doane University on Sept. 11. He hauled in two touchdown passes, each of 60 yards or more, too. In all, he finished with eight catches for 32.6 yards per catch.

Wingert registered double-digit tackles for the third time in his career. On the afternoon at Creete, Neb., he finished with 11.5 tackles, including one-and-a-half sacks, and snagged an interception.
