Morningside splits doubleheader in Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – After a strong opening weekend, the Morningside baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Mustangs cruised to a 10-2 win over Dakota State in the first game of the day, but fell to William Penn 7-4 in game two.

Morningside struck for five in the first and third innings in the win. In inning one, Aiden Bishop doubled home Jacob O'Dell and Eddie Brancato to start the scoring. Ryan Kiolbassa singled to score Giacomo Crosetti and Bishop scored on a Luke Froehlich fielder's choice. Cade Nolan grounded out in the following at-bat, but Kiolbassa scored on the play to make it 5-0.

In the third inning, Froehlich was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing a run to score. Nolan doubled home a run and O'Dell singled home the third run of the inning. Morningside's scoring burst ended with a Jayson Willers double to drive in two more. 

Bishop tallied two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored for the Mustangs offense. Nolan and Willers each doubled and drove in two runs. Kai Purdy-Burton was an ace on the mound, pitching six innings, striking out six, and allowing just one hit to improve to 2-0 on the season. Trey Hansen pitched the final inning for the Mustangs in the win.

A six-run third for William Penn was the difference in the 7-4 win. Jayson Willers hit a two-run bomb to get the Mustangs ahead 2-0 in the top of the first. William Penn scored a run in the bottom of the first followed by six in the third to make it 7-2. Kiolbassa was hit by a pitch to score a runner in the fourth and Bryan Garcia doubled to bring in a runner in the sixth, but it wasn't enough for Morningside to make the comeback.

Willers, Bishop, and Brancato tallied two hits each for the Mustangs. Both of Bishop's hits were doubles and Willers had two RBI. Conner Maston took the loss, pitching two innings for the Mustangs. Mason Hymer pitched three-and-two-thirds, striking out five in relief. 

Morningside is back in action against Baker and Clarke Sunday in Kansas City.
