Morningside splits opening doubleheader at Concordia

SEWARD, NEB. – Morningside split a rain-delayed series-opening doubleheader at league-leading Concordia, dropping the opening game 8-1 before coming back to win game two of the four-game series 9-4.

Kai Purdy-Burton got the win for Morningside in the nightcap, which started at approximately 9:30 p.m., pitching 6.0 innings and striking out six, while allowing just six hits for four runs by the dangerous Bulldogs.

Josh Pratt threw the final frame, walking one and striking out one while allowing no hits and no runs.

Brian Garcia had the hot bat in game two, recording three hits and two RBIs for the Mustangs. Alex Calabrese had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Ryan Kiolbassa had the final RBI, with the run scoring on a sacrifice fly. Morningside had no extra-base hits in the contest.

Elijah Rude was responsible for driving in the run in game one of the series. Jayson Willers had a pair of hits to lead the Mustangs.

Morningside heads into day two of the four-game series, where a Mustang sweep would bring one of the two brackets of the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament to Sioux City.
