Morningside falls to Doane 13-1, 10-5

Doane takes first two games of series, day two postponed

CRETE, NEB. – A true home opener continues to elude the Mustangs as field conditions forced Morningside to play at Doane University today. Doane took both games of the doubleheader, winning 13-1 and 10-5 as the visiting team.

Kai Purdy Burton gave up four runs in four innings pitched, striking out six. Tom Leathem struck out one in the final inning on the mound, throwing a scoreless seventh.

Nick Grajeda was the only Mustang to have multiple hits, while Eddie Brancato earned the RBI. Hunter Hope, Elijah Rude, and Alex Calabrese all had hits in the opener.

The bats made some more noise in the day's second game, though Grajeda was again the only Morningsider with two hits. Brancato knocked a pair of RBIs on a double in the second inning, while Willers and Grajeda also picked up RBIs. Alex Calabrese had a double in two at bats.

Cade Nolan struck out five in five innings of the nine-inning nightcap, giving up six runs with four earned runs. Logan Warkentin threw a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one.

The Mustangs have two games left in the series with Doane. Originally scheduled for Sunday, March 26, they have been pushed to Monday, March 27 due to the forecasted weather. First pitch times are still to be determined.
