Split resumes spring break schedule

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – A stellar bullpen outing headlined Morningside University's twin bill against Cornerstone University of Michigan Tuesday, March 8.

The trio of junior Wade Canaday (Marshalltown, Iowa), freshman Jackson Stephan (Cowichan, British Columbia), and senior Jordan Kyle (Lake Park, Iowa) limited the Golden Eagles to one unearned run on six hits while striking out seven over the final five frames. The offense rallied from an early 2-0 deficit with that mound effort and claimed a 6-3 victory.

Sophomore infielder Eddie Brancato (Arlington Heights, Ill.) smacked a home run and double to help drive in three. Junior catcher Jayson Willers (Davenport, Iowa) doubled twice and drove home two more Mustangs.

The nightcap looked like it would be moving to a Mside sweep. Head coach Adam Boeve's squad held an 8-3 lead through four-and-a-half. However, Cornerstone rallied back in the sixth and seventh to force a tie and then brushed aside a single Morningside run in the ninth with two of their own for a 10-9 decision.

Junior outfielder Hunter Jenkins (Bakersfield, Calif.) belted a home run and drove in three in game two. Senior outfielder Braden Smutz (Lake Stevens, Wash.) added two RBI, and junior infielder Elijah Rude (Hudson, Wis.) posted two hits.

Morningside (9-2) is back in action in the Sunshine State Thursday, March 10, winding up a three-game set against Cornerstone.
