Late-innings outburst guides Morningside to skid-snapping victory

BAKER, KS. - An 11-run seventh-inning rally by visiting Morningside College proved to be the difference in a Great Plains Athletic Conference's – Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference two-day series starter Monday, March 8.

Head coach Adam Boeve's Mustangs, moving to 5-12 and shrugging off a recent trend of four straight losses, produced the program's most runs in an inning since the 2003 team posted 13 against Wayne State College. The bats of freshman infielder Eddie Brancato (FR/Arlington Heights, Ill.) (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore outfielder Michael Boomgarden (SO/Yuba City, Calif.) (Yuba City, Calif.) topped the 11-tally, seven-hit offensive feast as each of them collected two-run doubles.

In the final numbers, freshman outfielder Hunter Hope (FR/Sioux City, Iowa) (Sioux City, Iowa) laced four hits, including one of five two-baggers the Maroon registered. Brancato and junior infielder Carter Kratz (JR/Vermillion, SD) (Vermillion, S.D.) tallied three RBI apiece. Kratz and freshman infielder Wade Canaday (FR/Marshalltown, Iowa) (Marshalltown, Iowa) each compiled three hits.

Junior right-hander Jake Prewitt (JR/Wenatchee, Wash.) (Wenatchee, Wash.) earned his first victory on the mound in a Maroon uniform. He fired two innings of one-hit ball that included three strikeouts. Prewitt, junior Billy Mount (JR/Burbank, SD) (Vermillion, S.D.), and freshman Zak Scott (FR/Mapleton, Iowa) (Mapleton, Iowa) combined to fan 10 Wildcats.

The short series resumes Tuesday, March 9, with a 1 p.m. nine-inning game at BU's Sauder Field.
