Mission Minneapolis - Mustangs, Mount Mercy meet in spring opener

Coming off a 2-3 fall season record, Morningside College's baseball program starts the spring portion of its 2020-21 season Sunday and Monday, Feb. 21 and 22.

Head coach Adam Boeve's Mustangs travel to U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., for a pair of doubleheaders against Heart of America Athletic Conference foe the Mount Mercy University of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Start times are 4 p.m. Sunday and noon Monday.

  • Junior Braden Smutz (JR/Lake Stevens, Wash.) (Lake Stevens, Wash.) was a one-person fall offensive blitzkrieg for Morningside. He hit .571 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI as part of a .643 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage. As part of a team .220 batting average in the five-game fall slate, freshman Hunter Hope (FR/Sioux City, Iowa) (Sioux City, Iowa) and junior Rease Snyder (JR/Carroll, Iowa) (Carroll, Iowa) were also above .350 at the dish with respective .385 and .364 averages.
  • Pitching played an integral role in the fall. Freshmen southpaw Caleb Thomson (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) (Libertyville. Ill.) and right-hander Wade Canaday (FR/Marshalltown, Iowa) (Marshalltown, Iowa) gave up just one earned and total run in 15 innings of work between them. They were also one-two in strikeouts (Canaday – eight/Thomson – seven). Junior lefty Jordan Kyle (JR/Lake Park, Iowa) (Lake Park, Iowa) was strong out of the bullpen, picking up a save and allowing no runs and two hits over three innings in his lone appearance to join junior Camden Parks (JR/Omaha, Neb.) (Omaha, Neb.) on the saves list. The overall staff ERA was a respectable 3.89.
  • Three Morningside fielders who have recorded 15 or more chances have a perfect defensive percentage (Smutz, Canaday, and freshman Aiden Bishop (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) of Lincoln, Neb.). Junior Carter Kratz (JR/Vermillion, SD) (Vermillion, S.D.) and freshman Brian Garcia (FR/Burbank, Calif.) (Burbank, Calif.) are in the upper 90s at .947 and .941, respectively.
  • The Maroon is scheduled to take on Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Kansas Wesleyan University in a four-game series Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27.
