Mustangs, Lancers close series with split

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside College sophomore pitcher Billy Mount (SO/Burbank, S.D.) is enjoying the mound view at Lewis and Clark Park.

The Burbank, S.D., native, forging a 1-1 record at the Mustangs' home venue in two starts, has allowed only four earned runs in 11 and a third innings. His home earned run average continued to tumble Monday, April 1, as he held visiting Mount Marty College to one earned run on four hits while striking out four in route to a 4-1 Mside Great Plains Athletic Conference win.

Mount, upping his overall mark to 2-1, got offensive aid from the outfield tandem of senior Drew Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) and junior Derrick Johnson (JR/Golden Valley, MN) (Golden Valley, Minn.). Kasperbauer tallied two hits that included a double and scored a run, and Johnson finished with two RBI.

Aiming for a loop sweep that would keep them among the conference's top half, Morningside attempted to come back from a 6-1 early innings deficit in game two. Junior Dylan Gasner (JR/Austin, MN ) (Austin, Minn.) and sophomore Brandon McClintock (SO/Omaha, NE ) (Omaha, Neb.) each drove in runs to highlight a two-run sixth inning rally. However, head coach Adam Boeve's charges left six on base in the final two at-bats, as MMC hung on for a 6-3 decision.

The Mustangs (16-9 overall, 6-6 GPAC) step out of conference play briefly Tuesday, April 2. They travel to Bellevue East High School in Bellevue, Neb., for a 7 p.m. first pitch against Bellevue University.
