Four and Oh! - Morningside sweeps GPAC opening set

TUCSON, ARIZ. – Buoyed by a pair of stout pitching efforts, Morningside College closed its 2019 spring break trip on a high note Thursday and Friday, March 14 and 15.

Turning to underclassmen hurlers in freshman Colby Seuntjens (Danbury, Iowa) and sophomore Billy Mount (Burbank, S.D.), head coach Adam Boeve's side threw up a pair of goose eggs. Seuntjens, compiling a second shutout appearance in his last three appearances, struck out 15 Dordt College batters and gave up just one hit, in a 9-0 win that wrapped up Thursday's twin bill sweep. Mount came back the next day in the doubleheader opener with a complete-game four-hitter that featured 10 strikeouts to help lead the way to a 4-0 decision.

Morningside, improving to 11-3 overall, also got some offensive superlatives over the four contests. Sophomore Jordan Pierce (Carlisle, Iowa) led the way in Seuntjens' dandy with two hits and three RBI; sophomore Levi Davidson (Dakota City, Neb.) and senior Drew Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) led the attack in a late-inning comeback in the series' finale with Kasperbauer producing three hits and winding up only a double shy of the cycle and Davidson had two hits including a double with two runs scored; junior Derrick Johnson (Golden Valley, Minn.) singled twice and scored once in Mount's masterpiece; and Davidson and junior Dylan Gasner (Austin, Minn.) each drove in a pair of runs in the series opener.

The Maroon are scheduled to begin their 2019 home slate Wednesday, March 20. York College of Nebraska visits Lewis and Clark Stadium for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
