Benedictine rally subdues Morningside

ATCHISON, KS. – A fast-starting offensive attack from Morningside College gave Mustang fans reason to see a bright horizon Thursday, Feb. 14.

The Mustangs, facing off against Heart of America Conference foe Benedictine College on its home Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium, struck for a single run in the first with the combination of sophomore outfielder Levi Davidson (SO/Dakota City, NE) (Dakota City, Neb.) and junior catcher Dylan Gasner (JR/Austin, MN ) (Austin, Minn.) doubling and singling and then came back with two more in the second spotlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of junior outfielder Derrick Johnson (JR/Golden Valley, MN) (Golden Valley, Minn.) for a 3-0 advantage.

Senior hurler Aaron Homme (SR/Papillion, NE ) was poised in a strong start, striking out seven and issuing only two walks over three and a half frames. The host Ravens managed to click against the Maroon bullpen led by a six-run fifth inning bonanza. The home team bullpen made it stand up for a 7-3 decision.

Johnson and freshman first baseman Nic Metcalf (Sedro Wooley, Wash.) each turned in three-hit efforts to lead the Morningside offense. The Mustangs hoped for a second chance against their hosts but inclement weather conditions forced cancellation of game two.

Head coach Adam Boeve's team returns to action Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and 24, at Joplin, Mo.
