Morningside ousters No. 25 Ottawa in Friday nightcap
BELLEVUE, Neb. – Shortly after sweeping the Goshen Maple Leafs on Friday, the Morningside University women's volleyball team defeated 25th-ranked Ottawa (Kan.) in similar fashion.
The Mustangs (5-1) defeated the Braves by set scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-22 in their second match of the GoSarpy.com Volleyball Classic.
As a whole, the Mustangs collectively hit .358 and had 50 kills. Sydney Marlow and Claire Wilson led Morningside with 13 kills each, while Emerson Smith had nine.
Aleksandra Dalach had 25 of the 48 assists, and she had two of the team's four service aces. Kyla Dyrstad had 18 assists.
Aureana Bernales led her 5-1 team with 15 digs.
Morningside scored six straight points early in the first set to distance themselves from the Braves. In that set, the Mustangs had 13 kills and just three errors.
In the second set, Morningside closed the stanza on a 6-1 run. During that run, Marlow had two kills while Jacey Miller had an ace.
The Mustangs hit .425 in set three, collecting 21 kills and having 40 total attacks. That set was tied at 20-20, but after a Morningside-called timeout, the Mustangs went on a 5-2 run. Wilson had three kills to close out the match.
