
Morningside falls in tough battle with No. 3 Northwestern

The Mustangs fell behind early in the first set, but battled within three at 14-11 midway through the set. The lead hovered in the three to five point range for the remainder of the set, but the Mustangs were never able to close the gap despite matching the Red Raiders in attacking errors.
The Mustangs were consistent in the first two sets, hitting .079 in both on the same number of attacks. The difference in the second set was Northwestern's efficiency, hitting .326 with three errors.
The Mustangs hung around early in the second set, staying within two points of the Raiders at 9-8. From there, the Raiders went on a six-point run to open up a 15-8 lead Morningside was unable to overcome.
The Mustangs had their best hitting set of the match in the third, with 11 kills on a .146 attack percentage. Northwestern matched the energy and opened up an early 6-2 lead. After the Mustangs got within four, 9-5, the Red Raiders scored four straight to force a timeout.
Morningside trailed 18-11 but battled back to within four at 20-16. Northwestern closed the door on the set and match from there by scoring five of the final six points.
Payten Lode and Sydney Marlow tallied eight kills each in the match. Aleksandra Dalach tallied an 18 assist, 12 dig double-double. Payton Shoquist tallied 16 digs and Marlow 13.
The Mustangs are back in action at Doane Saturday at 3 p.m.
