Harmon, Hammarlund score second-half goals to top Defenders

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Morningside women's soccer team continued its strong run in conference play Wednesday, rallying from an early deficit to defeat Dordt 3-1 at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The Defenders opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but the Mustangs (7-1-2, 4-1 GPAC) answered quickly. Trinay Garcia netted the equalizer in the 21st minute off a pass from Keyera Harmon to tie the match at 1-1.
After halftime, Morningside took control. Harmon gave the Mustangs their first lead in the 58th minute with an unassisted goal before Tuva Hammarlund added insurance in the 71st minute by converting a penalty kick.
"I was really focused on hitting my shot, and I really wanted to win tonight," Hammarlund said. "I knew it had to go in."
Morningside outshot Dordt 17-12 and held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Harmon led the offense with six shots, while Garcia and Hammarlund each added three.
Goalkeeper Moriah Dixson made five saves in the full 90 minutes, keeping Dordt off the board for the final 73 minutes.
The win marked Morningside's fourth in GPAC play and seventh overall as the Mustangs continue to climb the conference standings.
"We are playing so well right now," Hammarlund said. "We don't give up. I'm so proud of everyone. We take our chances, and we score. When we score, it's an amazing feeling and I'm confident in everyone on this team."
