MITCHELL, S.D. – It was Dakota Wesleyan day across the board for the Mustangs, as fall sports football, women's volleyball, and men's and women's soccer all met the Tigers in Sioux City or Mitchell. The Morningside women's soccer team squared off with DWU on the road, upsetting the Tiger senior day with a 2-1 victory.
Morningside got on the board early, with Jil Hellerforth getting an unassisted goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the first six minutes of play.
Coach Maxon's squad kept the Tigers at bay through the first half, with Morningside's defense diffusing all but one shot on goal in the first half. Keeper Isabel Ter Weeme neutralized the lone shot that made it to the goal, recording another four saves in the second half.
The Mustangs got some help from Dakota Wesleyan, as the home team netted an own goal to give Morningside a 2-0 lead with just over five minutes to play before the break.
A DWU goal in the final minute of play got the Tigers on the board, but wasn't enough to keep Morningside from claiming the victory.
The Mustangs, now 5-4-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 8-6-3 overall, have received the no. 6 spot in the eight-team GPAC tournament, and will travel to no. 3 Hastings on Wednesday, Nov. 2 for a 7 p.m. contest.
