Hard-fought battle eludes Morningside in GPAC quarterfinals
SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Another nip-and-tuck clash between Morningside College and Midland University went down to the wire Saturday, April 3.
As they have done throughout the 2020-21 campaign, head coach Tom Maxon's Mustangs scratched and clawed for every shot and kept the Warriors' offense off the board for most of the Great Plains Athletic Conference quarterfinal round meeting at Elwood Olsen Stadium. The hosts managed 12 shots towards MU's net with four coming on frame, as the freshman quartet of midfielders Eva Geiben (FR/Mainz, Germany) (Mainz, Germany) and Anna Ljulijic (FR/Neumuenster, Germany) (Neumuenster, Germany) and forwards Annemiek Goedhart (FR/Emmerich, Germany) (Emmerich, Germany) and Jil Hellerforth (FR/Luedensheid, Germany) (Luedensheid, Germany) each firing one off at visiting netminder Rachel Thigpen.
Thigpen managed to keep the Warriors' net clean over the 90 minutes, though. On the other end, senior goalkeeper Alexandra Homan (SR/Omaha, Neb.) (Omaha, Neb.) continued to prove her worth, picking up four saves of her own. Unfortunately, for the home crowd gathered on a picture-perfect spring day, Midland found the back of the Mustangs' net on a penalty kick shot in the early stages of the second half and held on for a 1-0 decision.
Morningside dropped to 12-4-1 and now awaits to see the outcome of the remainder of the tournament. A championship from top-seeded Briar Cliff University would send the Maroon to the 2021 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament.
