SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The early-stages record book for the Morningside College women's lacrosse team continues to be rewritten at nearly every turn.
That fact was in sharp focus Sunday, April 11. Head coach Caitlyn St. Marie's squad, battling Culver-Stockton College tooth and nail over 60 minutes at Tom Rosen Field, produced new standards for goals (six) and points (seven) in a single match. Simultaneously, junior midfielder/attacker Ashley Wilcox (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) (Council Bluffs, Iowa) turned in an individual game best in goals (four) during a 21-6 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference loss. Wilcox wasn't the only Mustangs' star showing her wares off in front of an appreciative home crowd.
Sophomore defender Erin Georgesen (SO/Homer, Neb.) (Homer, Neb.) added two goals on two shot on frame attempts and also won 10 draw control battles, another single-match individual school record. Sophomore midfielder/forward Lizeth Hilario (SO/Santa Ana, Calif.) (Santa Ana, Calif.) registered three ground balls and three caused turnovers, and freshman goalkeeper Natalie Hunt (FR/Pinedale, Wy.) (Pinedale, Wy.) turned in a resume of three ground balls and eight saves. Morningside, dropping to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the league, trailed only 3-1 less than three minutes in after Wilcox's first goal. CSC answered with six scores over the next six minutes for a 9-1 advantage that grew to 15-3 at halftime. The second 30 minutes was nip-and-tuck, with the visiting Wildcats holding a 6-3 edge.
St. Marie's squad started the weekend with a 21-2 loss at William Penn University on April 9. Wilcox, beginning a five-goal homestand, tallied one of the successful offensive attempts to go along with sophomore Bella Burdette (SO/Aberdeen, S.D.) (Aberdeen, S.D.).
The Maroon concludes the 2021 season, traveling to Midland University Tuesday, April 13. Match time is 4 p.m.
