Bokemper goal headlines inaugural match
OTTAWA, KS. – Friday, Feb. 28, 2020.
It's a date that will be etched in stone for Morningside College. Head coach Keith Lindgren's Mustangs played their first official competition overall and in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The 25-1 loss to a strong Ottawa University Braves' side on their AdventHealth Field was the least of the Maroon's takeaways. Freshman midfielder/attacker Courtney Bokemper (FR/Wakefield, Neb.) (Wakefield, Neb.) headlined the memorable moments, breaking through the home team defense and posting the program's first goal less than three minutes into the second half. It was the first score for either side in a near-even second half. After OU opened up an 18-0 halftime margin and didn't allow a Morningside shot in the first half, Lindgren's crew rallied back with the Bokemper score and just an 11-4 shot disparity in the final frame.
Sophomore midfielder/attacker Ashley Wilcox (SO/Council Bluffs, Iowa) (Council Bluffs, Iowa) added more first match highlights, with four ground balls, tying Bokemper for the team lead, two shot attempts, and three draw controls. Senior goalkeeper Ashlynn Frazier (SR/Fort Lupton, Colo.) (Fort Lupton, Colo.) also had an impressive debut with two ground balls and 11 saves.
Mside begins its home campaign Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15, hosting St. Ambrose University and Clarke University at Tom Rosen Field.
