Lopsided second quarter fuels Mustang win

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – A 21-8 second quarter gave Morningside's women's basketball team the separation it needed to cruise to a 72-50 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory over Mount Marty today, advancing the Mustangs to 7-5 and 5-3 in the conference.

It wasn't all smooth sailing, though, as the Mustangs only led by one point at the end of the first quarter, but a 12-4 run in the final six minutes of the first half sent Morningside into the intermission on a high note.

Alexis Spier led all scorers in the contest, with 20 points, followed by Lily Vollertsen, who had 16. Dani Peterson led the Mustang reserves with seven. Jordyn Carr had five assists in the contest.

Sam Ehlers tied Vollertsen on the boards, with seven rebounds each. Peterson had five, and Spier had four.

The Mustangs are back on the court on Tuesday, playing no. 8 Rio Grande at 10 a.m. in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
