Three-point barrage lifts Mustangs past Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – A 30-point opening quarter helped Morningside jump out to a lead they held onto in a 77-70 win over Jamestown Wednesday night in Jamestown, North Dakota.

The Mustangs shot a nearly identical percentage from the floor and from beyond the arc. They hit 24-of-53 shots for 45.3% from the floor and 14-for-31 for 45.2% from beyond the arc.

In the opening quarter, Morningside went a perfect 7-for-7 from three to open a 30-24 lead. Jaeden Webb, Alexis Spier, and Lily Vollertsen each hit two threes and Chloe Lofstrom had the other in the opening quarter.

The second quarter was quieter from deep for Morningside, but the lead doubled as the Mustang defense held Jamestown to 11 points in the quarter. Spier and Vollertsen had 10 points each in the opening half of play.

Jamestown outscored Morningside 35-30 in the second half, but Morningside's first half lead was too much for the Jimmies to overcome.

Four Mustangs scored in double figures, led by Spier's 17 and Lofstrom's 16. Spier added a team-high nine rebounds and Lofstrom pitched in a team-high seven assists.

Webb tallied a career-high 15 points, all coming on three-point shots, and Vollertsen added 14 points. Ella Wragge tallied seven points and seven assists.

Morningside is back to .500 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play with the win at 3-3, and is 6-4 overall. The Mustangs return home from the long road trip to take on Midland Saturday inside Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
