SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Set for Morningside's men's wrestling home finale tonight, the Hindman-Hobbs Center drew a full crowd for today's Great Plains Athletic Conference dual with Dakota Wesleyan. The Tigers pounced on the Mustangs in the outing, handing the home team their first conference loss, 22-13.
Morningside got wins from Christian Ahrens, Abraham Dirkx, Blaine Christo, and Jakob Jerabek on the day, as neither team scored a victory by fall.
Ahrens' major decision at 133 pounds was the Mustangs' biggest victory, as the first-year Morningsider tallied a 14-3 victory.
Dirkx, a senior, showed poise under pressure as he scored a late escape to score a 9-8 victory at 157 pounds.
Christo flipped the script in his 165-pound match as he entered the third period with a 1-0 deficit, quickly equalizing with an escape and outscoring DWU 10-2 in the period.
With the dual out of reach as Jerabek took the mat at 285, the graduate heavyweight scored a second period escape, with a penalty point and a riding time point to record a 3-0 victory and add three to Morningside's final score.
The Mustangs travel to the Missouri Valley Invitational this weekend, competing on Friday and Saturday in Marshall, Mo.
