Morningside starts season with split

PARKVILLE, Mo. — The Morningside University men's volleyball team split two matches on Friday to start the season in the Park Invitational.

Morningside opened with a 25-21, 25-18 and 25-22 victory over Goshen, and in the afternoon, the Mustangs lost in five sets to Westcliff.

In the win against Goshen, Morningside hit .308 in the first set, and .323 in Set 2. Natan Alves led the Mustangs with 10 kills, while Liam Lutz and Mohamed Benkrid collected nine.

Jacob DePauw had 30 of the team's 39 assists.

Alves also had seven digs, and DePauw had six.

Lutz, DePauw, Tharen Cox, and Sam Benick recorded a solo block. Cox also had two service aces.

In the match against Westcliff, the Mustangs won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-22, but the Warriors won the following three sets.

Alves had 19 kills and Benick recorded eight.

DePauw had 41 of the 46 assists. Owen Anderson had 13 digs.

Lutz collected three blocks.
