Morningside defeats Kansas Wesleyan 3-0

Mustangs venture into uncharted territory

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The Mustangs recorded another program first, capturing the first postseason victory in program history in a 3-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan University, 25-14, 25-17, and 25-15.  The win also marks the fourth consecutive win, a new mark for the record book.

Morningside's ranks were depleted in the match, following illness among the team, which has shuffled roles on the floor.

"I trust these guys more than anyone, not necessarily to be comfortable playing a position, but whatever these guys do, they just want to play the game and compete," explained coach Addison Mertler.

As a result, Erik Krenz and Owen Anderson found themselves playing well beyond their normal positions, with Anderson looking like a natural on the attack and Krenz digging every ball that was hit his way.

"Erik has come into a rhythm the last few matches," explained Mertler.  "His increase in offensive efficiency has opened up the rest of the team to be successful as well."

"I give everyone, especially Owen, Jacob, and Erik, all the credit in the world for being able to step into new positions at this crucial part of the season."

Krenz's day resulted in 15 kills at a .583 clip, with a game-high nine digs, three blocks and a service ace, while Anderson recorded collegiate kill number two and his first block while playing the net.

Isaiah Baynes led in the kills column, with 16, while Jacob DePauw converted 36 assists.  Dylan Hamil followed Krenz's nine digs with eight of his own, and struck for three consecutive aces to lead the team.

Morningside advances to the Great Plains Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday, March 30 at the University of Jamestown.

"Collecting this win and pushing the program is extremely exciting," reflected Mertler.  "We are super excited to continue to push and see how this program develops over the next couple years.  For these guys to be so young and set program records like this is amazing to see."
