Mustangs fall to William Woods at NAIA Championships

MOBILE, Ala. – The Morningside men's tennis team took on William Woods in their first ever appearance at the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championships Tuesday. The Mustangs fell to the Owls 4-0.

In doubles play, the Mustangs No. 1 squad of Mark Trenkle and Gustav Sjoberg fell 6-4 and the No. 3 team of Winyou Asavaruangchai and Abhishek Mohapatra fell 6-0. Santiago Minetti and Skander Ben Abdallah trailed No. 2 doubles 5-4 when the Owls secured the doubles point.

Minetti competed at No. 2 singles, falling 6-3, 6-3 and Ben Abdallah lost the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Mikhil Raja fell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Three matches were still in action when the match was decided. Mark Trenkle lost his first set at No. 1 singles 7-6 (7-5) and was trailing 2-0 in the second. Sjoberg won set one at No. 4 singles 6-4, but lost the second 6-3. Joao Pedro Pierry Izoldi Costa lost set one 6-2, but was tied 5-5 in set two at No. 6 singles.

The Mustangs season came to a close with the loss. They finished the year with an 18-5 record overall, a 6-0 conference record, won the regular season GPAC Championship, and won the GPAC Tournament to make their first ever NAIA Championships appearance.
