Morningside men advance to GPAC Championship with win over Doane
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NEB. – Darkening skies over the Sioux City metro area proved no threat to the men's Great Plains Athletic Conference tennis tournament, which had been moved to the First Serve Tennis Center. Doane put up a fight in its semifinal match with Morningside, taking the first team point from Mustangs in conference play this season, but the host team prevailed, winning the match 4-1 to advance to tomorrow's championship.
While Morningside eventually lost the doubles point, Winyou Asavaruangchai and Abhishek Mohapatra started the team off with a 6-2 win.
Facing a deficit, the Mustangs dug deep in singles play, with Gustav Sjoberg evening the score with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Mark Trenkle put Morningside ahead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory, and Joao Pedro Pierry Izoldi Costa put the Mustangs on the cusp of victory with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Skander Ben Abdallah put the nail in Doane's coffin, collecting a 6-1, 6-1 victory to advance Morningside to the championship match with Midland.
Mikhil Raja and Santiago Minetti both had the lead in their respective draws when they were called, with Raja leading 6-1, 5-2, and Minetti holding a 6-0, 2-4 lead.
The Mustangs will take the court at the First Serve Tennis Center again at approximately 1:30 p.m. on April 27, playing Midland in a repeat of the regular season championship after the women's championship concludes.
