Mustangs comeback falls one goal short in GPAC Championship

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – A late first-half goal and a goal in the second half gave Northwestern a 2-0 lead in the GPAC Championship, and the Mustangs were able to get within inches of the tie to force overtime but ultimately fall 2-1 in Orange City Thursday night.

The Red Raiders first goal came with less than five seconds remaining in the first half, and they added a second score in the 75th minute. Carlo Schmidt scored a goal on an assist from Yannik Vogel to cut the deficit to one less than two minutes later.

Morningside had a handful of late chances, including a shot from Levi Von Hagen that the Northwestern keeper made a leaping save on with under five minutes to play. Morningside also had a corner kick opportunity with just over a minute to go that the Mustangs were unable to punch in.

It was an even match throughout, as both teams had seven shots on goal and were both called for 15 fouls. Morningside had one more shot overall, 11-10. Von Hagen and Max Sickenberger totaled two shots on goal each and Schmidt scored on his only shot of the match. Timon Koerber totaled five saves in goal.
