Mustangs battle to 1-1 draw against William Penn

SIOUX CITY – The Morningside men's soccer team battled William Penn to a 1-1 draw Tuesday afternoon at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City.

William Penn took an early lead on a goal from Joseph Kitengie after Morningside's starting goaltender, Oliver Melander, collided with another player, leaving the goal open for the shot. The score gave the Statesmen a 1-0 halftime lead.

Tensions continued to rise in the second half, as Morningside was battling to get even and William Penn was attempting to remain unbeaten. Morningside evened the match with 31 minutes to play when Bennet Wesselkaemper passed to Jona Fischer for a goal. The goal was Fischer's second of the season.

Morningside kept the pressure on following the goal, having multiple presses give them shots at the net, but nothing was getting by the Statesmen goalkeeper.

Morningside would get one last attempt with six seconds left, as a yellow card from a William Penn player set the Mustangs up with a free kick from beyond the midfield line. The kick sailed long and no one was able to make a play on the ball, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

In total, six yellow cards were handed out to William Penn, compared to two for the Mustangs. Morningside had five shots on goal compared to six for the Statesmen. Timon Koerber tallied three saves in 67 minutes in goal after coming in for Melander, who exited the game in the first half.

Morningside is headed south for the weekend this weekend, facing Baker (Kan.) and Saint Mary Saturday and Monday respectively.
