
Mustangs sweep Comets with early rallies in both wins
ELKHORN, Neb. — The Morningside University baseball team swept Mayville State on Tuesday, highlighted by a 12-run first inning in Game 1. The Mustangs won the non-conference opener 12-3, then Game 2, 6-4.

ELKHORN, Neb. — The Morningside University baseball team swept Mayville State on Tuesday, highlighted by a 12-run first inning in Game 1. The Mustangs won the non-conference opener 12-3, then Game 2, 6-4.
Game 1: Morningside 12, Mayville State 3
The Mustangs' first seven men in the lineup reached base. Mike Snyder drove in two runs with a double right after Jacob O'Dell's RBI bases-loaded walk. The Mustangs forced seven walks and collected two hits in the first inning.
Morningside scored its final three runs during the third inning. Luke Blackmon drove in the final run with a single.
Ryan Kiolbassa drove in runs in the first and third innings for two RBIs. Michael Delzell had brought home a pair of runs.
Jordan Bierdemann earned the win in relief, pitching in four innings. He struck out five hitters, and allowed two earned runs on two hits. Tiago Sanchez, Josh Pratt, and Joe Harris also appeared on the mound.
Game 2: Morningside 6, Mayville State 4
The Comets scored all four of their runs, but that didn't deter the Mustangs. They responded with three first-inning runs. Delzell scored on an error, while Conner Maston and O'Dell had RBI singles.
Blackmon and Maston also had run-producing plays in the second inning. Maston later hit a solo home run to tack on the sixth run during the sixth inning.
Maston was 4-for-4 with three RBIs.
Sam Hanson received the win, holding Mayville State scoreless in 2 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits. Rhys Fairweather and Kade Yasui also pitched in relief. Mason Hymer picked up the save, pitching hitless frames over the sixth and seventh.
