Mustangs sweep Dordt, stay within striking distance of first

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside entered play Saturday in a tie for second place in the GPAC, and now stand alone after a sweep of Dordt at Mercy One Field at Lewis and Clark Park on a cold, windy Saturday in Sioux City. 

The Mustangs won game one 4-0 and game two 13-3 in seven innings. Morningside is 15-7 in GPAC play and has a doubleheader with Jamestown Sunday. 

Morningside stole the lead with an RBI-single from Eddie Brancato in the third inning. Jayson Willers added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Mustangs scored two in the sixth inning, first on a double by Luke Blackmon, then on a single by Jacob O'Dell

Brancato, Willers, Ryan Kiolbassa, Cade Nolan, Blackmon, and O'Dell recorded base hits. On the mound, Aiden Bishop was lights out, striking out six in a complete game one-hitter. Dordt mustered three base runners in total.

The Mustangs scored six in the first inning to cruise to the game two win. Kiolbassa singled to drive in two to get the scoring started. Nolan added an RBI-single and Bishop hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. To finish the scoring in the first, O'Dell hit a double to score two.

Morningside added four in the third, two in the fourth and one in the seventh. Bishop scored on a throwing error and Brian Garcia doubled to score another. Willers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a third run of the third inning to score, and the final run came on a Kiolbassa fielder's choice. 

Bishop hit an RBI-double and Garcia an RBI-single to make it 12-1. The final run of the game was scored on a Jared Dooley RBI-single. 

Garcia finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kiolbassa had one hit and three RBI. Nolan, Blackmon, and Tiago Sanchez tallied two hits each. Bishop and O'Dell drove in two apiece. Conner Maston pitched five and two-thirds, striking out 10. Sam Hanson finished the game on the mound, recording four outs, two of them via strikeout.

Morningside and Jamestown face off for two games Sunday before the final weekend of the season.
