Picturesque Pitching – Mustangs begin final regular-season series with sweep

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Sophomore Wade Canaday (Marshalltown, Iowa) and junior Caleb Thomson (Libertyville, Ill.) Thursday, April 28, added to the high-flying late-season script Morningside University has been writing.

Head coach Adam Boeve's stalwart starters kept Hastings College off balance on the Mercy One Field diamond at Lewis and Clark Park. Canaday set a new personal single-game high for strikeouts, notching 14 in a 9-3 game one decision. Thomson added a nine-strikeout, one-hit outing in game two, where he took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

Morningside's bats obliged the near mound perfection support they received. Freshman catcher Jayson Willers (Davenport, Iowa) crushed his fifth home run of the season in game one, part of a three-hit, two-RBI showing, to lead the accolades. In game one, sophomore infielder Aiden Bishop (Lincoln, Neb.) also picked up two hits. Game two saw the home side bust open the affair with four tallies in the third and three in the fifth. Willers was up to his old tricks with two RBI, and junior designated hitter Elijah Rude (Hudson, Wis.) added two hits, as did senior outfielder Hunter Hope (Sioux City, Iowa).

Reaching 30-or-more wins for the first time since 2017 and 10th time in program history, Boeve's bunch upped their current win streak to six by being victorious for the 12th and 13th times in the last 16 contests. The Mustangs (30-14 overall, 16-10 GPAC) wind up the regular and home season Sunday, May 1, finishing up a four-game set against Hastings. Start time for the Senior Day 2022 doubleheader is 2 p.m.
