YANKTON, S.D. – The trio of freshman catcher Jayson Willers (Council Bluffs, Iowa), sophomore infielder/pitcher Aiden Bishop (Lincoln, Neb.), and freshman designated hitter Alex Calabrese (Omaha, Neb.) guided Morningside University Sunday, April 3.
Willers pieced together a sparkling game one plate effort. He tallied three hits in five at-bats while driving in a run for head coach Adam Boeve's squad. Bishop was also on fire in the opener with two RBI and a double. Calabrese provided the lion's share of the success in the nightcap, belting a two-run home run.
Despite those superlatives, it wasn't enough to thwart the host Mount Marty University Lancers at their home Bob Tereshinski Stadium at Riverside Park. Looking to continue the momentum from a split on their home Mercy One Field at Lewis and Clark Park the afternoon prior, the Mustangs were held off 9-8 and 3-2 by a pair of home side walk-off victories.
Sophomore starting pitcher Quintin Holman (Nebraska City, Neb.) and relief standout Jordan Kyle (Lake Park, Iowa) combined for eight strikeouts in game one. Bishop and freshman reliever Jackson Stephen (Cowichan Bay, British Columbia) had similar effects in game two with six Ks.
Morningside (17-10, 4-8 Great Plains Athletic Conference) looks to rebound from the weekend series setback Friday, April 7. Defending league champion Concordia University visits Mside's home diamond for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
