
Mustangs fall in tough road contest at Doane
CRETE, Neb. – The Mustangs went on the road for the last time before a three-game home stand over the next week and fell to Doane in straight sets 23-25, 20-25, 17-25 Saturday in Crete.
CRETE, Neb. – The Mustangs went on the road for the last time before a three-game home stand over the next week and fell to Doane in straight sets 23-25, 20-25, 17-25 Saturday in Crete.
Doane opened an 11-6 lead on the Mustangs in set one, but Morningside responded by going on a five point scoring run to tie the set. Doane stayed one step ahead of the Mustangs for the majority of the set, and when the Mustangs rallied to get within a point at 23-22, the Tigers were able to seal the win in set one.
Morningside came out ready for the second set, opening up a 14-11 lead, but the Tigers responded by going on an 8-2 run to take a 19-16 lead. The Mustangs were able to hang around thanks to kills from Nienke van Drunen and Claire Wilson.
After a Doane attack error made the set 21-20 in favor of the Tigers, Doane had two aces and scored the final four points in the set to win 25-20. The Tigers used an 8-1 run in the middle of the third set to open up a big lead and win the match.
Sydney Marlow tallied 10 kills and 10 digs in the match. Wilson led the team with 11 kills. Aleksandra Dalach had 26 assists and Payton Shoquist 10 digs. The Tigers hit .307 in the match compared to Morningside's .177 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs are back in Allee Gym to take on Mount Marty Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Morningside Women's Volleyball will be raising awareness for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Wednesday, with attendees encouraged to wear gold.
